3D printed monsters from your mobile device

20130620-163525.jpgAnnoucement1Today, we are really excited, because we are featuring for the first time our monsters 3D printed. The idea of Monstermatic is customization: Create a monster, edit it’s name, change the color, the shape and the items it is wearing but ultimately, we offer the option to “make” the monster real by 3d printing it straight from your mobile device.

We opened a store here to showcase examples of the 3D printed monsters that will be available on Monstermatic. These are samples, we are constantly creating new variations, adding textures and creating items in our monster factory. Every pieces are swappable, the combinations are endless and all this is done from the tip of your finger.

I hope you enjoy these as much as we do ūüôā

GUIDE: Texturing in Maya for Color 3D Printing

IN MAYA

Start by adding a material to your object. Using a phong shader gives you more control over the specular. If you don’t want any specular, turn the specular color to black.

Texturing_01

Limit your model to 1 material. 2-3 is okay, but it starts adding unnecessary heaviness to the app.

Save .psd, and in Maya,  update PSD networks. ( Rendering Menu >Texuring > Update PSD Network). Continue texturing in Photoshop and updating in Maya until you arrive at a a final texture. Save the final texture out of Photoshop as a .jpeg. In Maya, replace the .psd with the .jpeg image.

Quick Tip: Save a .jpeg out of Photoshop with a quality setting of 8 instead of the maximum of 12. The quality of the image is the same, but the file size is smaller.

JPEG_12File Size:                                             340 K       JPEG_08File Size:                                              122 K

uvSnapShot

Open UV snapshot image in Photoshop

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Go over to the channels tab, ctrl left-click on the “alpha 1” channel. This will select only the lines from the Uvs.

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Go back to the layers tab again, click on the “create new fill or adjustment layer” button at the bottom, and select “solid color…

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Pick you desired color, and click OK.

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† You will now have a color layer with a mask so only the lines from the UVs will show.

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Using the solid color fill layer option makes it possible to adjust the color of the lines whenever you choose.

–¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Place this layer at the top of the layers in you texture file so you can see it all the time. Just hide it when needed, or similar.

Paint away! Save as .jpeg

Reload Texture in Maya

Continue to refine the texture until you’re finished.

I love Monsters on Instagram

InstaMonstersInstaMonstersArtists2Everyday weekday, for the past 2 month, we posted a new monster on our Instagram account (#monstermaticapp). We make these because they are great concept art, because we love making up stories about them and mainly because imagining new monsters is plain and simply super fun.

Before posting though, we randomly pick someone who gave us a shoutout and we give our daily monster their Instagram name.¬†Today, we had a suprise: ¬†2 artists posted a monster inspired by Monstermatic. Not only do they look great, it’s actually a really good feeling to know that what you love to do is shared by others :))

They are both talented artists, check them out on Instagram: Left: Belovedpolymer Right: Kingrazlan
